Founder Rev. John L. Walker

Reverend John L. Walker, Sr.

Pastor Emeritus

The Reverend John L. Walker, Sr., was born the eldest of two boys (John & Edgar) to the late Deaconess Harriet W. Grady and the Late John L. Grady. Born and reared in Wilmington, N.C., his mother was a faithful member of the Central Baptist Church where she carried the boys from infancy. At fourteen, John accepted Christ and began his service through teaching Sunday School, serving on the Junior Usher Board, Junior Choir and the Baptist Young Peoples’ Training Union. In 1944, he graduated from Williston High School and worked at the Local Shipyard painting Liberty vessels. In 1945, he migrated to Harlem, NY, and that same year he moved to Brooklyn, NY and joined the Concord Baptist Church where he also served on the Junior Usher Board and Junior Choir.

While serving in the U.S. Army, stationed at Ft. Belvoir, VA, he met and married Fannye Brooker. Out of this union came four boys: Ronald, John Jr., Marc, and Paul. Upon their return to NY, John worked as a member of Local 3 Electrical Union and worked for Illumination Products Industry while studying to become a Journeyman at night. In 1954, John received his certification from Brooklyn Evening Technical School. While on the job he met his life long friend the Late Rev. Theodore Jackson, who would later become Assistant Pastor of the St. Mark Church. Later, John and Fannye joined the Living Stone Baptist Church of Brooklyn, NY, where he served as President of the Men Fellowship, President of the Men Usher Board, Secretary of the Deacon Board, Superintendent of the Sunday School and the Assistant to the Pastor, The Rev. Dr. Ernest J. Middleton.

In 1964, John and Fannye joined the Merrick Park Baptist Church of Jamaica to facilitate the founding of the St. Mark Baptist Mission. In 1971, John was ordained by the Rev. Curtis G. Norton, and The Merrick Park Baptist Church. After three years of growth of the mission, they established the St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church. For a few years the Church occupied the first floor and basement of the Pastor’s home. Because of the continued growth of the church the Pastor and his wife purchased the building in which they now reside, for the church. Seven years later after further growth, the church moved to its present location.
